We are delighted to announce that, thanks to a donation from the Louise Grenier Foundation, Nurses Without Borders (NWB) and its Peruvian partner, Instituto de Educación Superior Tecnológico Público – Damaso Laberge (IESTP-DL), have completed the repair of the Community Center for the Promotion and Monitoring of Integrated Mother-Child Care (Centre de Promocion y Vigilancia Comunal – CPVC) in the village of Santa Cecilia, a remote community in the district of Indiana in Peru.
Located on the right bank of the Manati River which separates from the Amazon River in the middle of the jungle, the village of Santa Cecilia is only accessible by water for a two- to three-hour journey from the village of Indiana. Santa Cecilia regularly receives brigades of students in nursing and agricultural techniques from IESTP-DL, as well as NWB volunteers, who carry out internships there and at the same time provide assistance to the population.
Given the distance between Santa Cecilia and the village of Indiana, where IESTP-DL and NWB are based, and given the absence of a dedicated accommodation facility in Santa Cecilia, the community makes the CPVC available to these groups, where they set up tents to sleep. However, since the CPVC was not designed to accommodate groups over several days, renovations were required.

Therefore, the work consisted of improving the facilities of the CPVC by adding a functional kitchenette, a complete bathroom (with a toilet seat and shower), an emergency exit and an additional water reserve, thus making it better suited to group accommodation.
Improving the CPVC will allow students to spend several days in a row in Santa Cecilia and fully dedicate themselves to their learning and to community service. The village will also be able to receive aid workers who can stay on site and provide support to the village health center and educational institutions. In addition, the community hall is now a meeting place equipped with tables and chairs and is conducive to the development and implementation of initiatives from the local population.
