NWB IN BRIEF

Thank you for your interest in the activities of Nurses Without Borders (NWB). NWB is a Quebec non-profit organization that supports several international cooperation projects that take place in West Africa (Benin) or Latin America (Peru) each year. NWB is the only organization in Quebec entirely managed by health professionals and dedicated specifically to health care workers. NWB-SOLO GROUPS

Passionate about our clinical practice, we plan each year an initiation to international cooperation group whose members register not as a group, but individually. This group is called the NWB-Solo Group. Those interested can be health or social work professionals, retirees, multidisciplinary people or students! It is open to anyone wishing to engage in a humanitarian project related to health.

It is quite a challenge to bring together cooperants who do not know each other for the most part, but it is also an excellent opportunity to create a group of people who have the same vision and who share the same values: discover international cooperation, develop clinical skills, meet a new culture.

NWB-Solo projects are 3 or 4 weeks in duration with clinical days from Monday to Friday and cultural outings on weekends. The volunteers are expected to seriously engage in the clinical activities that have been decided by the group.

HOW ARE NWB-SOLO GROUPS GUIDED?

As an expert in the supervision of this type of project, NWB appoints two experienced support volunteers who will be responsible for the group. The support volunteers lead regular preparatory meetings (on a web platform), support the group in the field 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, do clinical supervision, take care of logistics (reservations, accommodation, budget, etc.). ) and ensure that the project is carried out in accordance with the NWB charter, the agreement between NWB and the volunteers, the code of life of the host environment and, finally, according to everyone’s expectations.

COST

The cost is competitive but, like any international project, is quite high. Most of our volunteers replace their annual vacation with an international cooperation project. Tax receipts can be issued according to the tax standards in effect for registered charities.

On average, the cost is around $ 55 per day in the host country, which includes accommodation, meals and cultural outings. For security reasons and in order to reduce costs, NWB chose dormitory accommodation. In addition, since the groups are not separated, this stimulates exchanges and the continuous integration of the experience. Finally, it is very similar to the working conditions of large humanitarian organizations. Before your departure, you must plan the cost of the plane ticket (between $ 1,200 and $ 1,600), full insurance ($ 60 to $ 120), visa (for Benin $ 176, not necessary for Peru), international vaccination ($ 100 to $ 900) and your pre-departure training with NWB (mandatory $ 300). Plan it in your agenda and in your budget as soon as possible!
